Zircon Sands

Zircon Sands

Zircon chemically known as Zirconium Silicate with chemical formula [ZrSiO4] commonly occur as an accessory mineral in Igneous rocks as a primary crystallization products, in Metamorphic rock and in Sedimentary rock as detrital grains. It has a Mohr’s hardness of 7.5 and it is resistant to heat and corrosion. Large crystals of Zircon are rare. Due to its hardness, durability and chemical inertness, it persists as sedimentary deposits in sands called Zircon Sands where it forms economic concentrations. It also occurs with certain Pegmatites.

Zircon Sands can be found in Kaduna, Nigeria. It is used as an Opacifier, in producing decorative ceramic and refracting materials. It is also utilized in water and air purification systems and in whitening porcelain tiles. Zircon Sands are mined through dredging and dry mining methods.
