Barite Ore

Barite is a brown-grey mineral which is the principal Ore of Barium. It is deposited through a large number of processes which includes evaporation, hydrothermal processes and biogenic processes to mention a few. It commonly occurs in Lead-Zinc veins as intrusions and can also be found in Sand and Sandstone.

In Nigeria, it is usually associated with brine springs. It infill’s fracture systems associated with hydrothermal veins of Galena, Sphalerite, and Iron minerals. It can also be found in Cross River, Nasarawa and Taraba.

It is popularly used as weighting agent in drilling fluids used in Oil and Gas exploration to suppress high formation pressure and prevent blowout. It is also used as filler in paints and plastics, in the production of dielectrics and also as gemstones.
