Coconut

Coconut is a very versatile and indispensable food item for most people under the tropical belt. It is a complete food rich in calories, vitamins, and minerals.

A medium-size nut carrying 400 g edible meat and some 30-150 ml of water may provide almost all the daily-required essential minerals, vitamins, and energy of an average-sized individual. It has three layers: the outside layer is known as the exocarp, and the fibrous husk or mesocarp is inside of it. The thin, woody layer surrounding the actual coconut "meat" is the endocarp.

Coconut Coir or Fiber:

Coir or coconut fibre, is a natural fibre extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes, and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. Other uses of brown coir (made from ripe coconut) are in upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture. White coir, harvested from unripe coconuts, is used for making finer brushes, string, rope and fishing nets used in floor mats and doormats, brushes, mattresses, floor tiles and sacking.

Coconut Shell:

It is the hard part of the coconut that contains the “coconut meant and water”. Due to its strength, it is used for various handicrafts (buttons, lamp holders, Ice-cream bowls, and jewelry box). It is also used to create active carbon which can be used as industrial purifier, or barbeque briquettes.

Raw or Unrefined Coconut oil:

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm. It has various applications. Because of its high saturated fat content, it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidification, lasting up to six months at 24 °C (75 °F) without spoiling. It has both medicinal and cosmetic uses.
